A Tandem Paragliding Adventure on Rushup Edge — Flying with Mark

There are some days in the Peak District that feel like they were made for flying, and this was one of them. Light winds brushing across the ridgeline, smooth lift rolling up the face of Rushup Edge, and long stretches of blue sky between soft clouds. It was the perfect setting for Mark’s tandem paragliding experience — and his enthusiasm from the moment he arrived set the tone for a brilliant flight.

Meeting Mark on the Hill

Mark turned up with that familiar mix of excitement and nerves — the “I can’t believe I’m actually doing this” expression I see on many first-time passengers. After a quick chat, some checks on the wind, and a full safety briefing, we geared up. He was eager, curious, and full of questions, which is always great energy to have on launch.

Rushup Edge was already delivering gentle, steady conditions — a pilot’s dream — so I knew we were in for a smooth takeoff.

Taking to the Air

The moment the wing came up cleanly overhead, Mark gave a solid run with me, and just like that… the ground tipped away. We lifted effortlessly into the cool Peak District air, rising above the ridge as the landscape opened up beneath us.

That first gasp — the mixture of surprise and pure joy — never gets old. Mark let out a laugh, half disbelief and half exhilaration, and immediately started taking in the sweeping views of Mam Tor, Edale, and the rolling hills stretching out into the distance.

This is unbelievable!
That became Mark’s catchphrase for the next 20 minutes.

Soaring Along the Ridge

The lift was fantastic, giving us plenty of height to play with. We cruised along the ridge, carving gentle turns, letting the glider settle into that perfect smooth glide Rushup Edge is known for on a good day.

Mark relaxed into the harness like he’d been doing it for years, pointing out walkers far below us and the patchwork of fields stretching into the valley. I even let him take the controls for a moment — something he took to immediately — and his grin somehow got even wider.

He couldn’t stop saying how peaceful everything felt. There’s something magical about that combination of silence, height, and open sky that’s hard to describe unless you’ve felt it yourself.

A Memorable Descent

As the air began to mellow out, we floated back toward the landing field. I talked Mark through the approach, and he was fully engaged, watching the ground rise gently to meet us.

We touched down smoothly on our feet — the perfect ending to a near-perfect flight.

Mark turned to me with the biggest smile of the day and said,
That was one of the best things I’ve ever done.

That’s why I fly.

Looking Back

Flying tandem is always a special experience, but flying with someone who genuinely loves every second of it makes the day unforgettable. Mark’s excitement, curiosity, and pure joy in the air made this flight one of the highlights of the season.

Rushup Edge delivered beautifully, the Peak District showed off in style, and Mark walked away with a memory he’ll be talking about for a long time.

And honestly?
So will I.
